Description

Plants going dormant now! They won’t look very good but they will come back in spring.

I bought my original plant from the now-closed Green Harvest nursery. This is a desirable species as it does not set seeds and become weedy.

Duck potato is easy to grow but needs to be grown in shallow water, a pond, bathtub or kiddie pool.

It is a perennial edible and is winter-dormant. While I haven’t grown sagittaria in Katoomba, it seems to be frost-hardy.

The starchy tuber is the edible part of duck potato and should never be eaten raw, roast, fry or bake instead. The bitter skin is best removed. For a root crop it has a relatively high protein content of 4-7%.

Prefers a sunny position.
