About This Plant

Note: sweet potatoes die down in winter and come back in spring. That means the leaves of the plants are losing strength atm, and they have lots of tiny holes. Unless you live in a region with more than light frosts, the plants will survive in the ground just fine, otherwise plant in a pot and overwinter in a protected spot. (update: 19/03/2026)

Kumara sweet potato has a red skin and cream coloured flesh with purple streaks.  The colour even intensifies with cooking. The Kumara variety contains high levels of Anthocyanins  which benefitcial against Alzheimer’s disease.

Kumara are delicious mashed or baked.

This sweet potato variety is a heirloom, originates from Polynesia and is very popular in New Zealand.
