Scented Geranium Rose,

About This Plant

Pelargonium graveolens (Rose-Scented Geranium)

Pelargonium graveolens, commonly known as rose-scented geranium, is a sensory delight in any garden! Just brushing against the foliage releases a rich, rose-like scent with hints of citrus and mint.

The aroma of rose geranium is a delight in the kitchen for cocktails and mocktails, ice creams, desserts, tea, cakes, and more. It is used in skincare but is also a medicinal herb in it’s own right.

Fragrance & Garden Appeal

Rose-scented geranium is all about a deeply aromatic scent, that can fill a garden corner or an indoor room.

  • Strong rose-like aroma with citrus undertones
  • Ideal for sensory gardens and aromatic herb collections
  • Excellent in pots, balcony planters, and herb beds
  • Naturally repels some insects thanks to its essential oils
  • Grows even indoors, but needs bright light.
  • Easy-care plant

Culinary Uses in the Kitchen

Despite its floral nature, Pelargonium graveolens is surprisingly useful in the kitchen. The leaves are edible and traditionally used to infuse flavour into sweet dishes.

  • Infusing cream, milk, or sugar for cakes and desserts
  • Adding to jams, jellies, and syrups for a floral twist
  • Brewing into herbal teas with lemon, honey, or mint
  • Decorating cakes and pastries (leaves are often removed before serving)

The flavour is delicate, so a little goes a long way—perfect for creative home cooks and artisan food makers.

Medicinal & Aromatic Uses

This plant is more known for its scent than as a medicinal plant, but historical herbalists used the plant as a relaxant and anti-depressant. It has antiseptic effects, reduces inflammation, is an astringent, and was used for the treatment of pre-menstrual and menopausal problems, nausea, tonsillitis, and poor circulation.

With rose geranium, you can create:

  • Pot-Purris for relaxation and emotional balance
  • Herbal teas for calming and soothing effects
  • Skincare infusions in oils, creams, and soaps
  • Stress relief through its naturally uplifting fragrance
  • Perfumes and natural body care products

Growing Rose-Scented Geranium in Australia

This plant thrives in warm, sunny to lightly shaded conditions, making it well-suited to many parts of Australia, including coastal NSW.

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade
  • Well-draining soil is essential
  • Drought-tolerant once established
  • Regular pruning encourages bushy growth and more fragrant leaves
  • Protect from heavy frost in cooler regions, probably not very frost-resistant
  • Can be grown indoors in bright light

It grows beautifully in pots, making it ideal for patios, courtyards, and small gardens where fragrance can be enjoyed up close.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • Highly fragrant and uplifting
  • Useful in cooking and home herbal projects
  • Easy to grow and low maintenance
  • Perfect for sensory and edible gardens

This is a great plant for your fragrant herb collection or tea collection.
