Old man saltbush is a tough bush food plant, which copes with drought, salinity and sandy soil, once established. If you want to harvest lots of these salty, protein, antioxidant, and mineral-rich leaves, grow it in the ground and the old man saltbush eventually will reach 3 meters. Otherwise it is happy in a bigger pot.
Use as you would use any leafy green.
Old man saltbush is suitable for cool and warm temperate, arid and sub-tropical climates. It needs well-drained soil and watering until the shrub is established. The soil ph should be at least 6 and not acidic.
Old man saltbush is regarded as a fire retardant.
