Kushen (Sophora flavescens) – Traditional Chinese Medicine Herb

Plant Overview

Kushen is a hardy plant from cooler regions, but is perfectly happy here is the Port Stephens area. It  belongs to the pea family (Fabaceae). It’s a shrub, rather ground-huggina and not more than a meter.

Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in sandy, well-drained soils.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established; avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Climate: Suited to warm-temperate regions; can grow in cooler areas.
