Giant Pink Sword Bean, Canavalia Gladiata, 5 Seeds

Giant seeds from a perennial vine, edible.

Description

These giant swordbeans are one of the coolest things to grow, the colour the size of the pods, all of it!

I have a couple of seeds to share, they are not germination tested but I harvested them maybe two months ago. I also didn’t eat them so far but I will plant heaps of them next year!

They are a short-lived perennial vine, dying down during winter (at least in Port Stephens).  If you want to eat them the fresh beans have to be peeled (not a huge job because they are big). The seeds need to be boiled thoroughly. Giant swordbeans have also various medicinal uses.

Sow in mid-spring, soak as any other bean.

Once I’ll use them I’ll keep you updated! (Just in case you wonder the blue bowl is glazed with “cash blue” from John Britt, fired to cone 10 reduction)

I am located further north on the Mid North Coast, NSW, located about 20km inland from South West Rocks, NSW. I find my Sword Beans grow as a perennial in our food forest. They grow up my bamboo clumps to a height of maybe 10m above the ground. I grow them on a horizontal trellis to act as shade for protection in the summer months.
