About This Plant

False Cardamom (Alpinia species)

Overview

False Cardamom is a lush, tropical understory plant that adds a vibrant green presence to any food forest or garden. It is the cold-hardiest of the Alpinia species, though probably frost-sensitive. Its spicy-scented leaves are prized in cooking and herbal use.

Please note!

False Cardamom does not hold up well in forestry tubes, so plants are sent bare-rooted. Either plant immediately or keep a pot with some potting mix at hand to allow the plant to establish quickly. This ensures you receive larger, healthier plants.

Soil, Sun, and Water Requirements

Prefers rich, moist soil and regular watering during warmer months. Likes shade and part-shade and looks bad i full sub, but will survive. Very hardy and copes well with heavy clay soil.

Growth Habit

Grows 1–1.5 meters high and wide. Can be grown in pots, even indoors. Here in Port Stephens, I use the plant sometimes as mulch plant, but further North that would be much more of a thing!

Culinary Uses

The leaves have a spicy aroma and can be used fresh in curries, or stuffed into poultry. They are also suitable for preparing aromatic teas.

Medicinal Uses

Herbalists use False Cardamom leaves for hypertension (high blood pressure), as a diuretic, antifungal, or anti-ulcer remedy.

Additional Notes

A hardy, versatile, and decorative plant, False Cardamom is ideal for food forests or tropical-style gardens, combining both ornamental value and practical use in the kitchen and herbal medicine.
