About This Plant

Overview

Davidson Plum is an ornamental, slender Australian rainforest tree that fits beautifully into narrow garden spaces. Known for its striking blue to deep purple fruit and elegant growth habit, it is increasingly popular in subtropical and warm temperate gardens across Australia.

Fruit and Uses

The vividly coloured fruit is rich in natural antioxidants, vitamins and anthocyanins, making it a recognised Australian superfood. Davidson Plum is used for jams, sauces, chutneys, desserts and native-food cuisine. To harvest, simply shake the trunk and collect the fruit as it drops naturally when ripe.

Growing Conditions

Davidson Plum thrives in part shade, mimicking its natural rainforest environment. It prefers moist, fertile, humus-rich soil but is surprisingly tolerant of poorer soils as long as they are free-draining. Avoid waterlogged, heavy clays, which can lead to root decline.

Soil Requirements

Ideal soils are loamy, well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Mulch generously to maintain moisture and support steady growth. In sandy soils, add compost and organic matter to improve water retention.

Sun Requirements

Best grown in part shade or filtered light similar to the forest canopy. Young plants can suffer leaf burn in strong afternoon sun, particularly in warm temperate and subtropical climates.

Watering

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during warm months and establishment. Water deeply rather than frequently to encourage a strong root system. Once established, Davidson Plum is moderately drought tolerant but still performs best with regular watering.

Frost and Climate

This species is suited to tropical, subtropical and frost-free warm temperate regions of Australia. It is sensitive to frost; even light frosts can damage new growth. Provide protection during the first few winters in borderline climates.

Wind Protection

As a rainforest species with soft foliage, Davidson Plum benefits from shelter from strong winds, which can shred leaves and slow growth.

Growth Habit

Seed-grown plants develop into tall, upright trees with a narrow footprint, making them ideal for smaller gardens or rainforest-style plantings. Height varies by species but commonly ranges from 3 to 8 metres in home gardens.

Local Info

Well suited to coastal NSW, northern NSW hinterland, Southeast Queensland, and other frost-free warm temperate and subtropical areas. In cooler parts of Australia, plant in a protected microclimate and provide winter cover if frosts occur.

Propagation

Plants are seed-grown, resulting in strong natural variation and resilient garden specimens.
