About This Plant

Molokai Purple Sweet Potato

Overview

Supplied as three prepared cuttings. This sweet potato variety is very high in anthocyanins, giving the flesh its vibrant purple color. These pigments have been linked to benefits for aging, hypertension, neurological health, inflammation, diabetes, bacterial infections, and cancer prevention. Molokai Purple is visually striking and nutritious, making it a standout addition to any garden.

Propagation

The cuttings are easy to propagate: simply stick them in your preferred medium such as sharp sand and keep moist. Some growers prefer to strike them in a jar of water. Once established, the plants grow vigorously and can be used as a groundcover.

Distinctive Features

  • Deep purple flesh, unlike typical orange or white sweet potatoes.
  • High anthocyanin content for added nutritional benefits.
  • Flavour: drier and nuttier than the orange shop-bought sweet potatoes.
  • Can be used as a decorative groundcover in the garden.

Plant Type and Lifecycle

Molokai Purple is a herbaceous perennial vine in warm climates. In cooler areas, grow it as an annual. The plant spreads across the ground, producing tubers over several months.

Soil, Sun, and Water Requirements

Prefers well-drained, fertile soil but is adaptable to moderately poor soils. Full sun produces the best tubers, though it tolerates partial shade. Water regularly, especially during tuber formation, but avoid waterlogging.

Frost Hardiness

Frost-sensitive. In colder climates, grow in containers that can be moved indoors or provide frost protection during cold periods.

Sowing and Harvesting

Plant slips or cuttings in spring once soil temperatures reach 18°C or higher. Harvest in late summer to early autumn when the vines begin to yellow. Tubers can be stored for several weeks in a cool, dry place.

Culinary Uses

The drier, purple tubers can be roasted, steamed, mashed, or baked. Their striking colour makes them perfect for visually impressive dishes and desserts. Any sweet potato leave can be served as spinach.

Additional Notes

Molokai Purple is easy to grow, nutritious, and adds both colour and value to your garden and kitchen. Its high anthocyanin content and unique flavour make it a superior choice compared to standard sweet potatoes. Unfortunately, all sweet potatoes are liked by kangaroos and deer
