Society garlic is such an undemanding plant for a sunny spot that it should not be overlooked for your perennial edible garden! It forms a small clump, has nice flowers to decorate a salad and does not take up a lot of space.

The flavour is somewhere between garlic and chives and does not cause garlic breath. The leaves can be finely chopped in salads, stir-fries or eggs. Decorate savoury dishes or salads with the flowers!
How to grow society garlic
Native to South Africa, it will grow in subtropical as well as cool-temperate climates. It is reasonably drought-tolerant.
Height: Usually 30–50 cm, with slender flower stems reaching above the foliage.
Spread: Around 30–50 cm wide, gradually forming wider clumps as the plant matures.
Sunlight: Full sun produces the best flowering, but society garlic also grows well in partial shade.
Soil: Adaptable to many soil types, including sandy and moderately poor soils. Good drainage is important, particularly in wet weather.
Watering: Drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then only occasionally during prolonged dry spells. It grows more vigorously and flowers more abundantly with some moisture.
Frost tolerance: Generally tolerates light to moderate frost. I grew it in Katoomba with frosts to at least -5C.
Climate: Suitable for cool-temperate and subtropical gardens and can grow in tropical regions too, provided drainage is good. In humid tropical climates, avoid persistently waterlogged soil and allow plenty of airflow.
Maintenance: Very easy to care for. Remove spent flower stems to encourage further flowering and divide overcrowded clumps when necessary.
Planting distance: Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart for a dense border or edible groundcover..
