Setaria palmifolia—commonly known as palm grass or highland pitpit—is highly valued in culinary traditions across Southeast Asia and the Pacific (particularly Papua New Guinea) because of its crisp texture, naturally sweet flavour, and dual-purpose edibility. The young shoots taste somewhat like a mix of bamboo shoots and asparagus, and the seeds are edible too.
Thrives in warm, humid, and tropical-to-subtropical climates with moist, fertile, and well-drained soils, as well as full sun to partial or dappled shade. It is not fussy about the soil and adapts well to sandy, loamy, or heavy clay soils, and tolerates a wide pH range from mildly acidic to neutral and alkaline. It performs best in rich soil that remains consistently damp.
It likes even moisture and thrives near creek edges or ponds. However, once established, it develops deep rhizomes and shows moderate drought tolerance.
