The ultimate hippie scent in case you still like it – it’s easy to grow in a frost-free climate. There’s a bit more to patchouli than just a nice scent, it is said to relieve anxiety, depression, colds, and headaches and is antifungal and anti-bacterial. Good news for the aging hippie: patchouli is also anti-inflammatory and yes, inflammation is the source of many chronic diseases.

I like black tea with two leaves of patchouli (per teapot not per cup!) and it can also be used in small quantities in baked goods, sweet dishes and drinks. If you are into cooking and have a special recipe please drop a link below! Traditionally patchouli was also used to protect from moths, bed bugs and cockroaches.

I try not to let my plant flower, or it looks like an untidy mess. It likes hot and humid conditions and is not drought-hardy. It prefers rich well-composted soil but I do grow it in sandy soil with little organic matter. Patchouli is a plant that thrives in shade to part-shade.
