🌿 Tinospora cordifolia — The Ayurvedic Power Vine
Tinospora cordifolia, also known as Guduchi or the Heart-Leaved Moonseed, is a curious-looking vine with knobbly stems that has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. This hardy tropical vine is astonishingly hardy.
💚 Why Grow Tinospora cordifolia?
Tinospora is famous as an immune-supporting, anti-inflammatory herb. In Ayurveda, it’s known as the “nectar of immortality” for its rejuvenating effects. The stems are often used in teas, tonics, and herbal extracts. In India, it is used to treat diabetes, . But beyond its healing properties, it’s a lovely green vine that softens fences, trellises, and pergolas — perfect for adding lush tropical character to your garden.
🌞 Growing Conditions
🌤️ Sun: Prefers full sun to part shade. My first plant was in nearly full shade. Giloy needs something to climb on (and will grow towards the sun)
🌡️ Temperature: Loves warmth and humidity but will tolerate light frost once established (protect young plants from frost). 💧 Water: Keep soil evenly moist — not soggy. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. 🌱 Soil: Thrives in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Add compost or worm castings for best results. 🌿 Growth habit: A fast-growing, twining vine that can reach several metres. Provide a sturdy support like a trellis or fence.
🌏 In Your Garden
Tinospora cordifolia is a pretty plant. Warty stems and lush, heart-shaped leaves make a perfect plant for a trellis. Guduchi also grows quite fast.
🌼 Local Tips for Port Stephens & Coastal NSW
In the Port Stephens region, Tinospora loves the warm, humid summers and copes well with our mild winters. It will survive the winter in Tea Gardens, but I have no experience how it would cope with frost.
🌿 Summary
– 🌞 Full sun to part shade – 🌱 Rich, well-drained soil – 💧 Regular watering – 🌡️ Light frost hardy once established – 🪴 Great for food forests, fences, and tropical-style gardens and food forests.
