Description
Alehoof (Ground Ivy) – Glechoma hederacea
Looking for a hardy, low-maintenance groundcover that’s both useful and beautiful? Alehoof, also known as Ground Ivy, is a charming, ground-hugging perennial that spreads easily to create a lush green carpet. Growing only around 5 cm high, it fills in bare spots, making it a fantastic choice for food forests, cottage gardens, or permaculture projects.
🌿 Garden Uses
Alehoof shines as a living mulch under fruit trees, along pathways, or anywhere you’d like to reduce weeding. It also cascades beautifully over the edges of pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets, adding a soft, trailing effect to your garden design.
🌞 Growing Conditions
Thrives in full sun to part shade
Grows in a wide range of soils, though it loves moist spots
Hardy in both hot summers and frosty winters – grows happily here in Port Stephens, and I also grew it in our cool Katoomba garden.
Very low-maintenance once established
🌱 Edible & Traditional Uses
Historically, Alehoof was valued as a bitter herb in beer-making and used in herbal teas, soups, and folk remedies for chest and sinus complaints. While its strong flavour isn’t for everyone, it remains a traditional culinary and medicinal herb. (Please note: avoid during pregnancy.)
💡 Why You’ll Love It
Spreads quickly to form a groundcover
A beautiful spillover plant for pots and hanging baskets
Hardy, easy to grow, and resilient in Australian gardens
