Description
Alehoof is ground-hugging, only around 5 cm high, but it spreads! Because it is so easy to grow, I will supply the plant as unrooted cuttings, which will most likely already have roots on them. Glechoma forms a nearly weed-excluding groundcover. If you don’t want it to spread, it also looks nice as a spillover plant in a pot or hanging basket.
As a bitter herb, alehoof is used in beer-making. In times past, ground ivy was used for ear problems, catarrh, sinus, throat and chest problems.
The leaves were also used in cooking and as a tea, but honestly, I don’t like the taste all too much! Avoid during pregnancy!
Glechoma grows well in Port Stephens and takes freezing temperatures. It grows in sun or half-shade, is not fussy about the soil, but prefers moist soils.
