About This Plant
Coastal Yarrow (Achillea millefolium var. californica) – Large-Flowered Medicinal & Garden Herb
Plant Description
This yarrow is native to the coasts of Oregon and California and is reputed to be the largest-flowered yarrow in the world. While the flowers are not as enormous as some sources claim, they are striking and the leaves emit a much stronger scent than common yarrow. The flowers are typically white, forming attractive clusters that stand out in any garden.
Herbal & Medicinal Uses
Traditionally, coastal yarrow was used by American Indians as an astringent, hemostatic (to stop bleeding), and antibacterial. It has a reputation as a first-aid herb, particularly useful for cuts and scrapes—making it a favourite for woodworkers or anyone handling tools like chainsaws. Herbalists may also use yarrow for digestive support, fevers, colds, and inflammation.
Anthroposophic & Biodynamic Uses
In anthroposophic medicine, yarrow is highly valued for its life-force and warmth. It is sometimes used in tinctures, teas, and ointments to support circulation and strengthen the body’s defensive systems. Biodynamic gardeners may use yarrow in compost preparations to enhance the microbial life and vitality of the soil.
Garden Uses
Yarrow is an excellent companion plant. It attracts beneficial insects, improves soil fertility, and can be used to create dynamic borders or low hedges. Its dried flowers also make long-lasting arrangements. The herb’s presence in compost is thought to stimulate decomposition and add nutrients to the soil.
