About This Plant
Fragrant Onion (Allium ramosum) is very similar to garlic chives (Allium tuberosum), but has a milder, less pungent flavour that makes it especially suited to salads, sandwiches and other fresh uses. Like garlic chives, it is an easy-care perennial herb that grows well in the garden or containers. Unlike common onions, Fragrant Onion returns year after year and gradually forms larger clumps, providing a reliable harvest of fresh leaves.
The white flowers look pretty in the garden.
Origin, Habitat and Culinary Uses
Fragrant Onion (Allium ramosum) is native to Central and East Asia, including parts of China, Mongolia, Siberia and Korea, where it grows naturally in grasslands, meadows, open woodland and rocky slopes. It has a long history of traditional use in Asian cuisine, where the aromatic leaves and flowers are used as a seasoning, similar to garlic chives but with a milder flavour.
How to Grow fragrant Onion
Fragrant Onion (Allium ramosum) is an adaptable perennial that grows well in full sun to part shade. In a food forest it is best suited to the herbaceous layer or forest edge, where it can receive good light while benefiting from the shelter of taller plants. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil with added organic matter but is tolerant of a range of soil types. Keep plants watered during establishment and extended dry periods, although mature plants are reasonably drought tolerant once established. It is a hardy plant that tolerates frost and cold winters, dying back in harsher conditions before reshooting in spring.
