About This Plant
Midyim Berry is a great understory plant for the bush tucker garden. It is one of the most delicious bush berries with good levels of antioxidants and vitamin C.
The compact shrub is very tidy and very undemanding and suits container gardens as well as wild bush food gardens.
Region and Habitat
Midyim Berry is native to the coastal regions of eastern Australia, occurring naturally from south-east Queensland to eastern New South Wales. It grows in the understory of coastal heath, open eucalypt forests, and rainforest margins, often on sandy, well-drained soils behind dunes and along the coast. Its natural habitat makes it well adapted to coastal conditions, including sandy soils, salt-laden winds, and periods of dry weather once established.
How to grow Midyim berries
Midyim Berry grows to around 0.5–1 m high and 1–2 m wide, forming a dense, spreading shrub or groundcover. It thrives in well-drained soils, including sandy and coastal soils, but it does grow in our poorly drained clay soil.
Plant in full sun to part shade, with full sun producing the best flowering and heaviest crops of berries. Some afternoon shade is beneficial in hot inland areas. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, although regular watering during extended dry periods improves growth and fruit production. It tolerates light frosts (to about -3°C) and is well suited to the warm temperate and subtropical climates of eastern Australia.
Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain a compact shape and encourage vigorous new growth and heavier flowering the following season.
