About This Plant

How to grow Kaffir Lime seeds

We extract very fresh seeds just before sending. These seeds will be moist-packed and have to be sown immediately, as viability declines quickly if they are allowed to dry out.

Kaffir lime seeds are polyembryonic, meaning most seedlings are clones of the parent tree and therefore grow true to type, making seed propagation a reliable method. For best results, sow fresh seeds 5–10 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix and keep them evenly moist at a temperature of 22–30°C. Place the pot in a warm, bright position out of direct afternoon sun. Germination usually takes 2–8 weeks, and seedlings typically begin fruiting in 3–5 years under good growing conditions.

Grown for leaves and Fruit

Nearly every part of the tree can be used. The leaves taste amazing in curries, the flowers are edible and the fruit has a very tart flavour. The zest can be used for cooking in drinks and baking.

Ideal for small Gardens and Containers

Kaffir lime grows fairly slowly and will grow up to 4 meters high, but is easy to keep much smaller. It will be very happy in a pot and is the ideal small fruit tree for a courtyard.

How to grow Kaffir lime

While full sun is best for fruit production, kaffir lime does well in part shade.

Climate: Best suited to tropical, subtropical and warm temperate climates.

Mature trees can tolerate light frosts down to about -2°C for short periods, but young plants are easily damaged even by 0°C to -1°C. Repeated or prolonged frosts will damage foliage and can kill young trees.

Kaffir lime can be grown in far North Queensland and with care as far South as Melbourne. South of Melbourne it probably would need winter protection.
