About This Plant

Stinging Nettle Herb Plant – Iron-Rich Superfood & Healing Herb

Stinging nettle is a weed and a pain in the back, difficult to manage because it stings, but it’s a herb you need. There’s no other herb like it and the  dried product is inferior as vitamins, phytonutrients and anti-inflammatory compounds are reduced in the drying process. Antioxidants, and enzymes are more active in fresh nettle.

According to my grandparents the sting of the nettle was good against rheuma and I think it’s more than a saying.

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), is a versatile perennial herb celebrated for centuries as a superfood, anti-inflammatory, and detox herb. Maria Treben praised it for a pletora of illnesses from eczema, kidney problems, sciata, to improve the circulation, tiredness and more serious illnesses.

Health and Wellness Benefits

  • Iron-Rich Superfood: Supports natural energy and overall vitality.
  • Anti-Inflammatory & Detox Herb: Traditionally used to reduce inflammation, aid circulation, and cleanse the body.
  • Culinary Uses: Leaves can be used in herbal teas, soups, and pestos for a nutrient-rich boost.
  • Skincare: Nettle extracts and infused oils can soothe skin irritations and promote healthy skin.
  • Liquid Fertilizer: Steep nettle leaves in water to create a natural, nutrient-rich fertilizer for your garden.

Growing and Care

Nettle is a weed, but it does like nice soil, it grows especially well in horse paddocks. When planting stinging nettle for practical use it’s probably best to keep it contained, because you don’t want to weed it out of other plants unless you like working with gloves.

  • Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with high organic content.
  • Sun/Shade: Thrives in partial shade but tolerates full sun in cooler regions of Australia.
  • Watering: Keep soil moist, particularly when establishing new plants. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Pruning: Regular cutting encourages fresh, vigorous growth. Harvest leaves as needed.
  • Hardiness: It grows well in our Port-Stephens area and can cope with any winter Australia can come up with.

Traditional Herbal Wisdom

Maria Treben was an Austrian herbalist and her book “Gesundheit aus der Apotheke Gottes” used to be a staple in German-speaking countries but also made it into the Czechoslovakia (the English edition is inferior though). Stinging nettle was one of her major herbs and she praised it for its blood-purifying and restorative properties. Maria Treben mainly worked with teas and baths and did not recommend many complicated medicines.
