This plant shows amazing growth even in our more temperate climate. Hack it back to the ground and it will reshoot nearly instantly. Although it does like good drainage, I want to try it as a supportive species in our poorly drained clay garden. It can be pruned at any height.
If you have good drainage it is a good supportive species. Kangaroos and deer leave it alone.
Despite the intense bitterness of bitter leaf, it is an important food plant in Africa and there are mouth-watering recipes like bitter leaf soup or ndole (I wouldn’t mind having a somewhat simplified recipe for Australian conditions). Bitter leaf has a high level of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Research shows that bitter leaf reduces blood sugar and inflammation.
Bitter leaf is easy to grow. It doesn’t seem to be frost-tolerant but I believe it should grow at least as far South as Sydney (let me know!).
