About This Plant

Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Overview

For maximum health benefits and organic, untainted roots, grow your own turmeric—it’s easy! And it is such a gorgeous tropical looking plant (don’t stick it in the back where no one sees it), it gives our warm-temperate garden a tropical jungle touch.

Turmeric is a hardy, herbaceous perennial that dies back in winter and returns in spring.

Why grow your own?

Grow your own turmeric for safe, chemical-free roots. Many imported, shop-bought turmeric products have been found to contain contaminants, especially heavy metals such as lead. It does not require extra garden space as it grows under trees together with other understory plants like vegetable fern or sweet potatoes.

Growing Conditions

Plant turmeric in a sunny or semi-shaded spot. It grows well as an understory plant in food-forests.

Soil Requirements

Turmeric grows best in fertile, well-draining soil with added organic matter. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilisation, which promotes leafy growth instead of root development. While it prefers well-drained soil, turmeric can adapt to clay and less-than-perfect soils, making it more resilient than ginger. It does grow well in our heavy clay soil garden and I find it much more prolific than ginger.

Watering

Provide regular, consistent watering to support healthy root growth. Turmeric tolerates short dry spells but performs best with adequate moisture.

Sun and Shade

Full sun or part shade works well. In hotter climates, partial shade can protect leaves from scorching.

Frost and Climate

Turmeric thrives in frost-free climates. In cooler regions, grow in containers and bring indoors during winter to prevent frost damage.

Growth Habit

Turmeric plants typically reach 1–1.5 meters in frost-free zones. In temperate climates, expect around 70 cm before harvesting in autumn. They are ideal for tropical-style garden aesthetics.

Harvest

Harvest the roots after the leaves start to die back in autumn. Careful handling preserves the vibrant orange colour and flavour of the roots.
