About This Plant

🌿 What is Aztec Sweet Herb?

Aztec Sweet Herb is a traditional medicinal and culinary herb from Central America. Its leaves are intensely sweet with a hint of mint, thanks to the natural sweetener hernandulcin. This makes it an interesting sugar substitute – but it must always be used sparingly due to the presence of camphor in some strains.

🍯 Culinary & Herbal Uses

Because of its sweetness, Aztec Sweet Herb can be used fresh in teas or as a flavouring in desserts and drinks. However, the real strength of this herb lies in its traditional medicinal role. The Aztecs used it as an expectorant to treat coughs, colds, asthma, and bronchitis. A tea made from the leaves can help soothe sore throats and ease chest congestion.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • ❌ Unsafe for pregnant and nursing women – historically used as an abortifacient.
  • ❌ Not recommended for children.
  • ⚖ Different strains contain varying levels of camphor; some may contain little or none, others more – so always use in moderation.

🌞 Growing Conditions

  • ☀️ Light: Prefers full sun but tolerates light shade.
  • 🌱 Soil: Needs well-drained soil; avoid heavy waterlogging.
  • ❄️ Frost: Not frost-hardy – protect in winter or grow in a pot.
  • 🌿 Habit: A trailing groundcover that also looks beautiful in a hanging basket, cascading with small aromatic leaves.
