About This Plant

Alternanthera (Tropical Edible Relative of Alligator Weed)

Overview

This tropical edible plant resembles Alligator Weed (Alternanthera sessilis) but is a close relative with solid stems, unlike the hollow stems of Alligator Weed. Mukunawenna is a semi-aquatic and is perfectly happy in a tub thus very suited to edible patio gardens.

Growing

Easily grown, prefers boggy conditions as it is a semi-aquatic. Thrives in full sun to part shade and tolerates a variety of soil types.

Growth Habit

A fast-growing, low-maintenance plant with a spreading habit. Height usually reaches 30–50 cm, forming a dense mat of colourful foliage. Regular trimming encourages bushier growth.

Culinary Uses

Young leaves and stems can be eaten fresh in salads, stir-fried, or lightly steamed. Ensure solid stems are cooked thoroughly if using mature leaves.

Additional Notes

Perfect for food forests, tropical gardens, or ornamental container planting. This plant offers both decorative value and edible versatility.
