Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) – Hardy Perennial Herb
Growing Conditions
Wormwood is a cold-hardy perennial that thrives in sunny positions. It prefers dry, poor soils and requires minimal watering once established. Be aware, it can become weedy if not managed.
Traditional & Herbal Uses
Historically, wormwood has been used for digestive issues, Crohn’s disease, malaria, pain relief, arthritis, and as a treatment for parasites. It is also an ingredient in absinthe (though Artemisia pontica is another species used in absinthe). Always consult a qualified herbalist, as wormwood contains thujone, can thin the blood, and may cause kidney problems if misused.
Pest Repellent & Garden Uses
Wormwood is a natural insect and rodent repellent. It is ideal for planting around chook pens or garden borders to deter pests naturally.
